Noel Gallagher: ‘A night out with Morrissey inspired track on my new album’

Noel Gallagher has told Q that an evening down the pub with Morrissey helped to inspired a track on his new solo album.

Speaking in our new issue, Q343 out now, the former Oasis man admitted he’s in debt to The Smith for influencing the direction of album opener Riverman.

“We all go out to this bar and Morrissey brings this mix CD with him, because he hates listening to other people’s music,” Noel tells Andrew Perry of a night out in a Los Angeles bar with the singer and Russell Brand.

“We were chatting away, bullying Russell mainly, and then Morrissey would point at the speaker and go, ‘Name this tune!’”

One of the songs, that Gallagher couldn’t identify, was Brian Protheroe’s Pinball. However the song later came to inspire the saxophone and guitar solos of his own LA sounding tune.

“I have to thank Morrissey for that,” he admits, “but I will state that he’s not getting any fucking royalties for it. Or a credit. I’m just saying thank you now.”
